Alison Laing (b. 1999) is a Scottish painter and illustrator based in Edinburgh.
After graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2021 with a BA(Hons) in Illustration, Laing went on to develop her artistic practice inspired by a semester studying Painting at Hochschule Luzern Design, Film, Kunst in Switzerland. Since then her work has been exhibited in institutions such as the Royal Scottish Academy, City Art Centre, Dundas Street Gallery and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Her paintings attempt to capture a fleeting moment in time and make it permanent by translating it onto the canvas using bold brushstrokes and energetic mark-making in oils. Usually on a small scale, her works are intimate snapshots of every day life, turning even the most mundane scenes into extravagant vignettes using her distinct artistic vernacular.
Laing seeks to probe the notion and act of painting. She believes that small works are like little windows of intrigue and wants her work to entice the viewer to get up close in order to let the details of delicious brush marks emerge.
